Genesis is a student-led fashion show that fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration among students. The event and its organizers seek to redefine fashion by empowering artists, celebrating diversity, and advocating for a sustainable future.
REJECT THE TREND MACHINE.
REJECT THE TREND MACHINE.
To shed light on the harmful practices of the fast fashion industry, our Fall 2023 Show alluded to the collapse of Rana Plaza in Bangladesh in 2013, a direct result of the fast fashion industry's business model. To represent the impact of this event, we crafted an experience that encompassed the chaos and destruction caused by the rapid production of clothing across the world.
With minimal funding and a goal to only use recycled materials for both the garments and set design, I was challenged to elevate the experience of the inaugural Genesis Fashion Show, thinking “outside of the box”.
THE BOX
Inspired by the drama of Alexander McQueen shows (think of that iconic Shalom Harlom moment from the No. 13 Spring/Summer Show, 1999), Genesis strived to create the same fusion of fashion and performance art. The production centered around a towering box positioned at the heart of the room. As the models followed a path along it, the show built toward its final act: the structure would collapse in an orchestrated moment of destruction, revealing the final garment beneath.
Emerging from within the wreckage, the final model would command her own performative moment, turning to face each side of the audience in sequence before slowly approaching each corner of the room, allowing every viewer an intimate encounter with the garment.
