Genesis is a student-led fashion show that fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration among students. The event and its organizers seek to redefine fashion by empowering artists, celebrating diversity, and advocating for a sustainable future.
The theme for this year’s show was Fluidity, as a celebration of concept in all its forms — embracing movement, nature, gender, life, and everything beyond traditional binaries. From that theme, a story was developed centering around a storm. This story unfolded as a four-act show: the calm before the storm, the storm, and stages of renewal after the storm.
During an 8-month creative process, I created budget sheets, mood boards, material selections, concept sketches, a show script, 3D renders, floor plans, light plans, and elevation drawings to guide the design and story of the space.
Leading up to the show, I also directed the content for the visuals and music, working closely with motion designers Julieta Bukin, Abigail Atwell, and Luka Zukhubaia, who produced the music for the show.
Separating the four tones of each act into writing, I created narration for our story, which would open and close the show. This script not only provided a full-circle moment for guests but also served as a key document for our team to ensure design integrity across all departments.
ACT 1 - CALM
In the quiet moments before a storm, the water stands still. A reflection lingers on the surface. It mirrors not just the world around us, but the depths within.ACT 2 - CHAOS
As the storm takes full form, we realize that within the chaos, something new is born.ACT 3 - ROUGH
Enter the eye of the storm, where the essence of water and the fluidity of identity collide, creating movement that blurs boundaries.ACT 4 - RENEWAL
After the storm, the world exhales. In this stillness, we begin again. The music ends, cueing a blackout of all lights in the space. From the darkness, a single silhouette emerges.DESIGN PROCESS: FABRICATION, LIGHTING TESTS, PROTOTYPES & SET UP
We started with measuring out the space and placing markers to replicate the dimensions of the runway from the design intent. We did everything from painting, building, drilling, rigging, installing, and cleaning.
DESIGN PROCESS: DESIGN INTENT PACKAGE
Detailing out floor plans, light plans, elevations, and fabrication instructions.
DESIGN PROCESS: 3D MODELS & RENDERS
From my loose floor plan sketches, I translated these ideas into 3D renders, testing different lighting schemes, focusing on colors, temperatures, and brightness of the production. DESIGN PROCESS: BLUESKY IDEATION
Variations of layover sketches, materials, and mood boards.COLLABORATIVE BRAINSTORMING
Collaborating with the motion designers, I developed mood boards for each act and guided the LED visuals and soundtrack progression to create four distinct scenes with a cohesive narrative and visual identity.
